Along with preparing an intern to take on professional tasks, working in an office abroad will give a human resources intern the opportunity to interact with people from different cultures and develop other abilities. Life in London

Though the weather may be occasionally grey and rainy, London is a vibrant, beautiful and historic city. The Intern Group provides pleasant accommodations in safe, residential areas of London including Canada Water, Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays. Interns have the option to live in private bedrooms in high quality shared apartment accommodations or stay with a local family. Living with a local family is best for interns wanting to live the full immersion experience.

A city of culture

More languages are spoken in London than any other city in the world, giving interns the opportunity to meet people from all over the world. In addition to its cultural diversity, London is bursting with artistic and historical treasures. Art fans will have more than enough to see in London as the city is home to 857 art galleries. When it comes to live music, performances and festivals, London hosts 17,000 music performances a year and over 250 festivals. Among these festivals is Europe’s biggest street festival, Notting Hill Carnival. Interns in London also have access to some of the best comedy acts in the world as the city is also a world capital for live comedy.

The sites

London is full of beautiful architecture with deep historical significance. The city is home to four UNESCO world heritage sites including the Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich, Kew’s Royal Botanic Gardens and the Westminster Palace. The clock tower at Westminster, also known as Big Ben, is perhaps the city’s most iconic structure and a must-see for interns abroad.

On a tour of London’s Buckingham Palace, an intern abroad will learn to fully appreciate the building’s historical and modern significance. The palace is now home to much of the royal family though it originated as a townhouse for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703. The giant palace is among the city’s architectural treasures and has 830,000 square feet of floor space.

The Palace of Westminster is another historic structure that continues in use today. Both houses of the UK Parliament, the House of Commons and the House of Lords, debate over current legislation in the famous palace. Westminster was first built in the eleventh century and was home to the Kings of England up until 1512, when a fire caused severe damage to the structure. Interns abroad are welcome to visit the palace by arranging a tour.

St. Paul’s Cathedral is yet another cherished London structure. The original church dates back to AD 604 as the Anglican cathedral is the mother church of the London Diocese. Sitting high on London’s highest point at Ludgate Hill, the cathedral standing today was built in the late 17th century. Interns can check out the structure’s English Baroque style and iconic dome by booking a guided tour.

Evenings out

London’s West End is internationally-famous area located in the central part of the city. It includes many tourist attractions, including iconic public squares and circuses, notable streets and districts. However, the West End is most well-known for its fabulous theatre scene. Whether it be Shakespeare or large-scale musicals, interns abroad can see mainstream professional shows in “Theatreland”. Some of the West End’s longest-running shows include The Mousetrap, Les Misérables and Phantom of the Opera. The Intern Group human resources internship program actually includes an evening out at the West End for a night of top-notch live theatre.

London has a lot to offer its foodies, with over 65 Michelin-starred restaurants. The city also boasts a diverse dining scene, so interns can find just about any type of cuisine on any given night. For some classic English food, interns can try the London dining establishment Rules. It’s the oldest restaurant in London and was established in 1798. They serve classic British food like game, pies and puddings. Offering a similar classic English meal, the restaurant Dinner offers plates that were created as a modern reflection of traditional British recipes.
