Office do’s and don’ts for the holiday season

Written by Admin | Dec 14, 2015 12:00:00 AM

Take a lesson from the Starbucks cup fiasco – some people take their holidays very seriously.

‘Tis the season to celebrate whilst not offending your coworkers! Enjoying what you love about the holidays while remaining culturally sensitive and office appropriate all at the same time can be a bit of a balancing act for a workplace novice. Here are some useful tips to help you survive your first holiday season in the office.

Office do’s and don’ts

DO be respectful and aware of the various religious beliefs and their cultural importance during the holiday season.

DO NOT assume everyone celebrates Christmas, so opt for a “Happy Holiday” unless you are certain.

DO get into the holiday spirit by baking cookies, wearing red and green, and participating in office games like Secret Santa.

DO NOT blare holiday music for all to hear.

DO spread holiday cheer through gift donations and other programs that help the less fortunate also celebrate the holidays.

DO NOT overspend (or underspend) on your Secret Santa gift.

DO bring delicious holiday treats for all to share.

DO NOT forget to warn people with allergies if there are nuts or other ingredients that could trigger a reaction.

DO take advantage of your office holiday party to get to know your colleagues better.

DO NOT drink too much alcohol (even though it is free) and start ranting about hot button issues like the Starbucks cups, Donald Trump or Syria.

DO get your dancing shoes on and have a very happy holiday!

Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year from our office to yours! –TIG
