Moving abroad isn’t always an adventure filled with sunshine and selfies. Whether you're studying, working, or just exploring a new culture, adjusting to life in a foreign country can be overwhelming. New city, new workplace, new norms - it’s natural to feel lost or frustrated sometimes.

The key to thriving abroad is learning how to stay emotionally grounded and resilient. Here are 9 ways to stay positive while living abroad, even on the toughest days.

    1. Acknowledge Your Emotions.

If you're feeling homesick, frustrated, or unmotivated, give yourself permission to feel it. Suppressing emotions can backfire over time. Accepting what you're going through is the first step toward processing and moving forward in a healthy way.

Tip: Journaling is a great outlet when you're not ready to open up to someone else yet.

    2. Remind Yourself Why You Chose This Journey.

There was a reason you packed your bags and took the leap. Maybe it was to grow, gain independence, or pursue a specific opportunity. Revisiting your original motivation can reignite your sense of purpose, even during the low moments.

Remember: Growth often comes through struggle. Embrace it as part of your story.

    3. Laugh at the Chaos.

Nothing helps lighten the mood like humor. When things go wrong (and they will), try to find the funny side. Laugh at the language slip-ups, the wrong train rides, or that awkward cultural misunderstanding.

Laughter helps you release stress and move forward with resilience.

    4. Reflect on What’s Bothering You.

Sometimes stress abroad isn't just about the surface problem. Dig deeper. Is it a lack of control? Culture shock? Isolation? Understanding the why behind your feelings helps you address them more constructively.

Pro tip: A solo walk or meditation session can help bring clarity.

    5. Talk About Your Struggles.

You’re not alone. Chances are, your peers or roommates are experiencing similar feelings. Opening up builds connections and helps release emotional pressure.

Consider: Joining local expat or student support groups online or in person.

    6. Create Personal Mantras.

When you feel stuck, mantras can help you reset your mindset. Use simple, empowering phrases to remind yourself of your strength and purpose.

    Examples:

    • “Discomfort means I’m growing.”
    • “This is temporary, but what I gain will last forever.”
    • “Every challenge is a new opportunity.”

Post your favorites on your mirror or desk for daily motivation.

    7. Move Your Body.

Exercise is one of the best natural mood boosters. Whether it’s a morning run, yoga class, or dance workout, moving your body helps regulate stress and boosts mental clarity.

Bonus: Joining a local gym or fitness group is also a great way to meet people and feel more connected.

    8. Practice Daily Gratitude.

It’s easy to focus on what’s missing. Flip the script. List at least five things you're grateful for each day. Over time, you’ll start to notice more of the good.

Start simple: "I’m grateful for my health, for trying something new, and for the chance to see the world from a new perspective."

    9. Remember: Your Time Abroad Is Temporary.

No matter how difficult things feel right now, this chapter won’t last forever. Don’t let short-term discomfort steal long-term rewards. Make the most of each moment, even the tough ones, as they often end up being the most transformative.

Live fully. Learn deeply. Leave with no regrets.

Living abroad can be one of the most rewarding, but emotionally intense, experiences of your life. By staying mindful, grateful, and proactive, you'll not only survive the ups and downs, but come out stronger, more confident, and forever changed.
