Traveling solo as a woman can be an empowering and life-changing experience. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or embarking on your first solo adventure, staying informed about safety measures is crucial. In this guide, we’ll provide essential solo female travel safety tips to help you navigate the world with confidence.

    1. Trust Your Gut Instinct.

If something feels wrong or makes you feel uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation immediately. Over time, you’ll sharpen your ability to distinguish between unnecessary worry and real danger.

    2. Always Have Backup Navigation.

A fully charged phone with GPS is essential, but always carry a paper map and written directions in case of battery loss or poor signal. Knowing your route before heading out reduces stress and increases your safety.

    3. Protect Your Personal Information.

Avoid oversharing your travel plans or accommodation details with strangers. While it’s great to make friends, keep specifics like your hotel or itinerary private.

    4. Set Clear Boundaries.

If someone is making you uncomfortable, confidently set boundaries. If necessary, saying "I’m meeting someone soon" can help deter unwanted advances. Some countries, venues, or hostels will have their own safety measures in place if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe like the 'Ask for Angela' scheme. Research different schemes and measures in your location before you go and don't be afraid to use them.

    5. Keep Valuables Secure and Minimize Flashy Items.

Avoid displaying expensive jewelry, cameras, or large amounts of cash. Use a crossbody bag with a secure zipper and consider a money belt for added security - keep your bag on you and avoid using backpacks.

    6. Research Local Customs and Laws.

Understanding cultural norms helps you blend in and avoid misunderstandings. Some destinations have specific dress codes or social expectations—respecting these makes travel smoother and safer.

    7. Walk with Confidence and Awareness.

Confidence is key when traveling alone. Walk with purpose, maintain situational awareness, and avoid looking lost. If you need to check directions, step into a café rather than stopping in the middle of a busy street.

    8. Be Smart About Nightlife and Going Out.

If you plan to enjoy the nightlife, keep an eye on your drink and never accept drinks from strangers. Stick to well-lit areas, use ride-sharing apps with verified drivers, and always double-check that the license plate matches the one on your app before entering a vehicle.

    9. Watch Out for Pickpockets and Common Scams.

Tourist-heavy areas attract pickpockets. Stay vigilant in markets, public transport, and major attractions. Keeping your belongings secure prevents theft.

    10. Know Emergency Contacts and Local Resources

Save the local emergency numbers, including the nearest embassy or consulate. Have both digital and written copies of all important contacts in case of an emergency.

At The Intern Group, we have robust safety measures in place and offer 24/7 in-country support to give you peace of mind while you complete your internship abroad.
