Architecture Internships in Europe
Few professions let you study centuries of design decisions simply by walking down a street, but that's what architecture practice in Europe offers every day, medieval foundations, Georgian terraces, Habsburg-era palaces and contemporary towers all competing for space within the same historic city blocks. An architecture internship in Europe puts you inside that layered built environment, working alongside architects who treat heritage, regulation and ambition as part of the same design problem rather than separate concerns.
The Intern Group offers architecture internships across three distinct European cities, each shaped by its own particular design pressures. London pairs some of the world's most internationally recognized architecture practices with one of the most rigorous heritage protection systems anywhere, while Dublin's architects balance a serious national housing shortage against a near-complete collection of Georgian streetscapes. Madrid rounds out the group with a design culture confident enough to move between restoring historic buildings and raising ambitious new towers within the same career, often the same year.
Whether you're a university student, recent graduate, gap year student or career changer, our architecture internship program in Europe can help you build practical experience across some of the continent's most distinctive design cultures.

Why do an architecture internship in Europe?
Practicing architecture in a European capital means working inside a built environment few newer cities can offer, dense layers of history that every new design has to answer to in some way. Interns gain firsthand experience of a profession where creativity and regulation are tightly intertwined, where a single project might require historical research, structural ingenuity and a persuasive planning application before a single wall goes up.
That shared foundation plays out differently in each of our three architecture destinations. London's scale and international reach mean exposure to design ambition operating at a truly global level, while Dublin's housing pressures push residential design to the front of every conversation. Madrid adds a talent for reinvention, turning former industrial buildings into some of the city's most admired cultural spaces. Across all three, you'll find a profession shaped by sustainability requirements that grow stricter each year, pushing environmental thinking into even the earliest design sketches.
Our European destinations are particularly strong in areas such as residential and housing design, heritage and conservation architecture, urban regeneration and sustainable building design, giving you exposure to a profession balancing ambition, history and regulation in three very different ways.

Hear from our interns in Europe
"As an architectural intern, I’ve been very involved in the early design phase. I’ve worked on one project so far, which involved a lot of concept development and schematic proposals, giving me valuable insight into European architectural practices. The Intern Group staff in Madrid have also been incredibly helpful, even with the smallest inconveniences. They’re always there when I need someone to reach out to, which makes it feel like I’m not so far away from home." - Carmelle Martinez, architecture intern in Europe
"Every time I go out, I love seeing the architecture, the people, the stores, and everything the city has to offer. I think the most important thing about being in the program is staying open, not only to the new culture and adapting as well as you can, but to everyone you meet. Your fellow interns and coworkers all have something new to teach you and a different way of looking at things that you may not have considered before." - Christian Ridder, Europe architecture intern

What is it like to live as an architecture intern in Europe?
Life as an architecture intern in Europe depends heavily on which city you call home, though certain habits tend to carry across all three. You'll likely find yourself seeking out whatever that city's version of an open-house festival or heritage walk might be, the kind of event locals barely notice but that gives an architecture intern a free study trip through buildings normally closed to the public.
Weekends tend to involve a day trip somewhere just outside the city, a chance to see how the surrounding region's architecture differs from the capital's own. Colleagues who've spent years restoring or designing within strict regulatory limits are usually happy to point out details you'd otherwise walk straight past, turning an ordinary commute into something closer to a standing architecture lesson.
