Hi! I’m Danielle, and I’m excited to be starting my 6-month international internship abroad with The Intern Group here in South America. I’m originally from New Jersey, and as I transition into my new role, I’ve had the pleasure of training alongside Sugar, the outgoing intern.
I sat down with Sugar to hear her final thoughts and reflections before she wrapped up her unforgettable internship experience in Latin America. From cultural insights to solo travel tips, here’s what she had to say.
What did you enjoy most about interning in the Latin America office?
“That’s such a tough question! There’s so much I’ve loved. The highlight has been the unique opportunity to travel while gaining valuable professional experience. Before coming here, I was eager to see the world but didn’t want to risk having a gap on my resume. This internship gave me the best of both worlds.
I’ve had the freedom to explore, and at the same time, I’ve developed key skills for my future career. Most of all, it’s the people at The Intern Group who made this experience so incredible. I couldn’t have asked for more supportive and inspiring co-workers.”
Top 3 Travel Tips for Interns Abroad
1. Stay open-minded
“Some of my best travel experiences came from spontaneous decisions. Say yes more often and you’ll be surprised what amazing places you discover.”
2. Don’t over-plan
“During my first big trip, I scheduled every detail. It felt restrictive. Leaving space for spontaneity makes travel more fun and less stressful.”
3. Try solo travel
“I never imagined I’d travel alone, but after a solo weekend trip to Argentina, I’m hooked. Independent travel can be empowering, peaceful, and truly rewarding.”
What’s the strangest food you tried while abroad?
“The most surprising dish was mote con huesillos, a Chilean summer drink made from sweet peach syrup, wheat, and a whole peach floating in it. It’s refreshing, but definitely an acquired taste!
Oddly enough, I also developed a love for sushi while in South America. It’s everywhere, but it’s not like sushi back home because it’s often deep-fried and packed with cream cheese or avocado!”

What professional skills did you gain during your internship?
“So many! My internship focused on Marketing and Business Development, where I was given real responsibility that helped me grow fast. I also improved my time management, team collaboration, and office communication skills. Living in Latin America also helped me improve my Spanish, which is a huge bonus professionally and personally.”
What do you wish you didn’t pack?
“I packed light, but I still brought clothes I never wore. I wish I had considered how often I use certain items. I could’ve saved space for the things I bought during my stay.”
What do you wish you had packed?
“I underestimated the weather when packing. Many people think South America is warm all year, but it can get very cold, especially in winter! I only brought one jacket and one jumper. Next time, I’d pack for multiple seasons.”
Final Advice for Future International Interns
“If you’re nervous about taking the leap, just go for it. I haven’t met anyone who regrets doing an internship abroad. It’s life-changing.
I also recommend pushing yourself outside your comfort zone. Immersing yourself in a culture very different from your own broadens your perspective in ways nothing else can.”
